How is your NJ motorcycle insurance premium determined?

September 23rd, 2011

Insurance companies use an in-depth method to evaluate how much your NJ motorcycle insurance will cost. The process they use is called underwriting, and there are many different criteria by which they assess the cost of your insurance rates.

When you apply for a motorcycle insurance policy, the insurance company predicts how much money it might have to pay out and how many claims it might have to pay out.

One way it does this is by checking your driving records to see how many accidents you have been involved in, or how many traffic infringements you’ve accumulated.

A “colorful” driving record is likely to cause higher rates, while a clean driving record can get you a discount on your rates. If you do have a past misdemeanor but have no history of accidents or claims in the past three years, you probably won’t be penalized by a rate increase.

Insurance companies could also look at your credit report to determine your premium. If you have a poor credit history you might be charged more for your NJ motorcycle insurance policy.

There are plenty of other things that affect your rates – such as the type of car you drive, your gender, your age, and your bike’s vulnerability to theft. The more you know about what affects your rates, the better decisions you can make about how to decrease them.
